We know you've been thinking about a simulator for some time now, and the big question is:
“How much does a golf simulator actually cost?”
The answer depends on several factors, including the technology you choose, the size of your space, and the overall experience you’re looking to create.
At Pioneer Golf Co., we design everything from entry-level simulator setups to fully custom luxury installations. Here’s how we typically break down the pricing and decision-making process.
1. Entry-Level vs. Premium Golf Simulator Setups
For starters, our golf simulator packages begin around $15,000.
Can you build a simulator for less? Absolutely, but there are usually trade-offs.
Lower-cost setups often include:
Budget-friendly ground-based launch monitors
Limited short-game accuracy
Smaller hitting areas
Gaming laptops instead of dedicated gaming PCs
Net-and-mat setups instead of full enclosures
Basic monitor displays instead of immersive projection systems
For many golfers, this is a great way to get started and experience simulator golf for the first time. However, as golfers use their setup more frequently, many eventually look to upgrade for:
Better accuracy
Improved realism
More immersive visuals
Enhanced software performance
Better practice capabilities
That’s where a professionally designed custom simulator begins to stand apart.

2. Your Available Space Plays a Huge Role
The size and layout of your room significantly impact both the design and cost of your simulator.
Recommended Golf Simulator Space Requirements
In general, here’s what we recommend for a comfortable experience:
Screen Distance from Wall: 8”–12”
Ceiling Height: 9’–10’ minimum for most golfers
Hitting Distance from Screen: Approximately 10’
Turf Depth: Around 15’ from the back wall
Swing Clearance: Driver swings typically extend to the 17’–18’ range
Furniture & Seating: Ideally positioned 25’ from the screen
One of the simplest tests: Take your driver and comfortably swing in the room.
If you feel comfortable, there’s a good chance we can design a simulator solution for your space.
And if your room dimensions are tight? That’s where custom design experience becomes critical. We might need to find a creative solution, explore different launch monitors, or increase the size of the room.
3. Right-Handed vs. Left-Handed Golfers
Another major factor is whether the simulator will be used by:
Right-handed golfers only
Or both right- and left-handed players
Right-Handed Golfers Only
If your room is at least 15’ wide, golfers can typically hit from the center of the mat comfortably.
If the room is narrower, we can create an “offset hitting position” that shifts the golfer slightly off-center while maintaining proper software calibration and ball flight alignment.
Right & Left-Handed Golfers
For mixed-handed play, room width becomes even more important. If the room is under 15’ wide, we typically recommend an overhead launch monitor paired with a sliding mount system. This allows the hitting area to shift left or right during play while keeping the simulator experience seamless for both golfers.
Ground-based launch monitors can become inconvenient in these scenarios since they often need to be repositioned constantly between shots.
4. Overhead vs. Ground-Based Launch Monitors
Choosing the right launch monitor is one of the biggest decisions in any simulator build.
Overhead Launch Monitors
Overhead systems are generally considered the premium solution because they offer:
Cleaner aesthetics
Larger hitting zones
Better club and ball data
Easier right/left-handed play
Minimal maintenance
“Set it and forget it” functionality
Mounted overhead and integrated into the space, they create a cleaner and more seamless user experience.
Popular overhead systems range from approximately:
$5,000 (entry-level overhead, ex. Vtrack)
Up to $23,500+ for premium systems like Trackman iO

Ground-Based Launch Monitors
Ground-based units are excellent starter options and can provide tremendous value.
However, they typically:
Include smaller hitting zones
Sit beside the golfer
Need occasional repositioning
Introduce visible wiring
Become less convenient for mixed-handed play
The best option ultimately depends on your goals, budget, and how you plan to use the simulator.
5. Custom Golf Simulator vs. Cage System
One of the final decisions is whether to build:
A fully custom simulator
Or a freestanding cage setup
Custom Golf Simulator Installations
Custom simulators are designed specifically around your room and typically include:
Wall-to-wall impact screens
Premium acoustic paneling
Integrated LED lighting
Hidden wiring
Luxury finishes
Integrated soundbar / speaker capabilities
Enhanced sound reduction
Fully immersive aesthetics
Custom builds generally cost an average of 15–20% more than cage systems due to the labor, materials, and customization involved.
However, they maximize the appearance, performance, and long-term value of the space.

Golf Simulator Cage Systems
Cage systems are an excellent alternative for golfers looking for:
Faster installation
Lower overall investment
Portability
Future upgrade flexibility
These systems typically install in 1–2 days and work well in garages, basements, and multipurpose spaces.
Modern cage systems also blend surprisingly well into darker rooms using blackout fabric and steel framing.
